Evangeline M. Mitchell, Esq., Ed.M. is an author/publisher, filmmaker/producer, social entrepreneur, non-profit founder and leader, and lawyer. She has always dreamt of telling stories and sitting behind the camera and declared her interest in being both a filmmaker and a lawyer while still in high school at 16 years old.
Filled with a deep passion and strong desire to share insight and educate others based on her own and others’ lived experiences, she fiercely believes that video and film serve as perhaps the most powerful tools in which to impact others and inspire social change.
Director Evangeline M. Mitchell was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. She is a graduate of HBCU (historically Black college and university) Prairie View A&M University, the University of Iowa College of Law, and Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She is a licensed lawyer, author/publisher, and social entrepreneur. She is currently working on her Certificate in Documentary Arts from the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies and her Certificate in Television and Film Essentials from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She is married and has two children – a daughter, Nyla, and a son, Michael. They currently reside in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Evangeline has dreamt of becoming a filmmaker since she was a teenager. Her inspirations were filmmakers Spike Lee (“School Daze”) and Henry Hampton (“Eyes on the Prize”). Now, she is courageously living her dream and devoting her energies (whenever she can make time) to working on and realizing impactful documentary projects with a particular focus on sharing the stories of the lived experiences of Black law students and lawyers in their elusive pursuit of finding justice and equity amidst the paradox/contradictions of the history and ongoing realities of Black people in America. Her primary goal in wanting to create film is to tell untold stories, make a meaningful contribution and significant impact, and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
We want to encourage and support more African Americans who want to become lawyers! #becomingblacklawyers
